Celia, the new TV series based on the life of legendary Cuban singer Celia Cruz, has been a hit for Telemundo. Celia and powerhouse novella, Senora Acero have helped Telemundo's prime-time viewership jump 23 percent to 1.46 million in the latest Nielsen ratings. Rival and long-time market leader, Univision has declined 21 percent to 2.29 million during the same period.
The star of the series is Puerto Rican actress Jeimy Osorio, who plays the younger titular character of Celia Cruz. Celia is produced in Colombia by Fox Telecolombia and RCN, and will run through February 2016.
Osorio, who was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico is not providing the vocals. Producers found that licensing the rights to Celia Cruz’s original music was going to be too expensive and held a sound-alike audition and hired singer Patricia Padilla to record the series’ songs.
Jeimy Osorio does sing, has signed a new recording deal with Sony Music and is working on an album of classic songs by Celia Cruz. You can watch Celia on the Telemundo network and on their website www.Telemundo.com
